Why a coast practice is not a Nairobi practice
Upcountry advice does not transfer. Humidity keeps skin and ear canals damp, so infections that clear up elsewhere smoulder here. Warm damp sand is close to ideal hookworm habitat. Tick pressure never lets up, and tick fever kills dogs that were only ever described as tired. Heat that a Nairobi dog shrugs off can put a coastal one in real trouble, because panting barely works in saturated air.
So we write for this coast specifically, and we plan around it. Anaesthetics go on morning lists so recovery is not happening through the hottest part of the day. Vaccine travels in a cool box, because a broken cold chain injects perfectly and protects against nothing.
How we work
- We publish what things cost. Almost nobody in Kenya does, and the silence has a price: owners put off a vaccination because they cannot guess the bill, and the animal arrives later and worse.
- We are honest about distance. Mombasa and around gets same-day home visits. Diani, Kilifi, Watamu and Malindi get scheduled visiting days, because Malindi is 120km away and pretending otherwise is a promise we would break.
- We tell you when it can wait. If your animal is fine until next week, we will say so rather than book something we can charge for today.
- We say when the cheaper option is the right one. The KSPCA runs subsidised sterilisation and vaccination. Most clinic websites will not mention that. For a lot of households it is the difference between the surgery happening and not.
The animals we see most
A large share of the coast's dogs and cats are semi-owned: fed by several households, belonging to none, and reproducing freely. Seasonal towns like Watamu and Mtwapa produce more of them than anywhere else we cover, because animals taken on in a busy season get left when it ends. If you feed one, sterilising it is the single most useful thing you can do, and we would rather help you do that than pretend the situation is not there.
