- The Mama Ngina waterfront is a busy public promenade in the evenings, and it is where a large number of Kizingo dogs get their only real exercise. That means close-quarters encounters with other dogs daily, and lead reactivity comes up here more than in the compound-based suburbs.
Kizingo’s pets are older than anywhere else on this coast, because Kizingo’s households have been here longest. Most of what we do in this part of the island is geriatric medicine.
Arthritis is the condition most often missed. Owners read stiffness as age and accept it, quite reasonably, because it came on slowly. It is treatable, and the change in an old dog after a fortnight of proper pain management is often striking. If your dog has quietly stopped doing something it used to do, that is worth raising.
Dental disease runs a close second and for the same reason: slow onset, animals hide it, and it gets filed under old age.
The waterfront is Kizingo’s distinctive local factor twice over. The salt-laden breeze dries and irritates skin in animals kept outdoors on that frontage. And the evening promenade is where most Kizingo dogs actually exercise, which means daily close-quarters meetings with other dogs. That produces a lot of lead reactivity, and it is worth ruling out pain first, because a dog that hurts reacts more.

My dog is twelve and stiff in the mornings. Is that just age?
Stiffness that eases after ten minutes is usually arthritis, and arthritis is treatable. A great many old dogs in Kizingo are in more discomfort than their owners realise, because the decline was slow enough to look like ageing.
