Malindi is roughly 120km and about two hours north, and it is the furthest point we cover. It is served on scheduled north coast days with Kilifi and Watamu, never at short notice. We would rather tell you that plainly than have you waiting.

- Malindi has a large and long-settled Italian community, and its pet population reflects decades of continuous ownership rather than seasonal turnover. Animals here are older, usually well documented, and the work skews heavily towards chronic and geriatric medicine.
- The Sabaki river mouth north of town creates extensive seasonal wetland and floodplain, and mosquito and biting insect pressure around it is the heaviest on this coast. Dogs kept on that side of Malindi carry a visibly different skin and insect-bite burden.
- Malindi airport takes regional and charter traffic, which makes pet relocation paperwork a live topic here in a way it is not in Kilifi or Watamu. Owners still generally need to route long-haul through Nairobi, and the timeline surprises people.
- Being 120km from Mombasa, Malindi households have effectively no same-day access to a Mombasa clinic. Owners here manage more at home, for longer, and often arrive with a condition that has been running for weeks rather than days.
Malindi is the furthest place we cover and in several ways the most settled.
The long-established Italian community here has meant continuous, generational pet ownership rather than the seasonal churn of Watamu or Diani. The animals are older, usually have proper records, and the medicine that matters is chronic rather than acute: arthritis, dental disease, kidney monitoring, and eventually end-of-life care.
Arthritis is the condition most often accepted as ageing and left untreated. It is treatable, and an old dog is frequently in more discomfort than its owner realises because the decline was slow. For a Malindi household, one proper assessment can set up months of management you then run at home, which fits the distance well.
The Sabaki floodplain to the north is the local environmental factor. Seasonal wetland there produces the heaviest insect pressure on this coast, and dogs kept on that side show it.
Relocation paperwork comes up more here than anywhere except Nyali, and it catches people the same way: the rabies titre waiting period is fixed at up to three months and no vet can work around it. Malindi airport will not usually take you long-haul either, so plan for the Nairobi leg.

Longer than the flight schedule suggests. A rabies antibody titre test plus its waiting period can run to three months, and most long-haul routes still go through Nairobi rather than Malindi. Start the day the move looks likely.
What can be handled without me driving to Mombasa?
More than you would think. Ring and describe it. Some things genuinely wait for the next visiting day, some can be managed at home with instructions, and some cannot. We will tell you which, and we will not invent a reason for you to make the drive.
