Skin and ear problems in coastal humidity
If your dog's ears keep flaring up, the humidity is doing half the work. Treating the flare without changing the conditions guarantees the next one.

Why the coast is different
Skin is a barrier and barriers fail when they stay wet. On the Kenyan coast they stay wet a lot of the time.
The organisms causing most skin and ear trouble in dogs, principally Malassezia yeast and staphylococci, live on normal healthy skin in small numbers. They only become a problem when conditions let them multiply: warmth, moisture and a compromised barrier. Coastal humidity supplies the first two continuously.
The clearest demonstration is what happens to dogs that move. Owners relocating from Mombasa to Nairobi routinely report that a chronic ear problem simply stopped. Nothing changed about the dog.
Ears, specifically
Ear canals in dogs are long and turn a corner, so they drain badly and dry slowly. Add a floppy ear flap sitting over the opening, and there is effectively no airflow.
Now add sea swimming. Salt water and fine sand go in, the canal stays damp for hours, and the population of yeast that was sitting there harmlessly gets its opportunity.
Practical measures that genuinely help:
- Dry the outer canal after swimming. Cotton wool, gently, in the parts you can see. Never push a cotton bud down the canal, which packs debris against the eardrum.
- Ask about a drying ear cleaner if your dog swims regularly. Used routinely it prevents far more than it treats.
- Do not treat blind. The right medication depends on whether it is yeast, bacteria, or mites, and on whether the eardrum is intact. Some ear drops are dangerous if it is not.
Hot spots move fast
A hot spot is a patch of skin the dog has licked or chewed raw, and it can go from coin-sized to palm-sized overnight. They are commoner here for the same humidity reason.
Clip, clean, stop the licking, treat the infection, and find the trigger. That last step is the one usually skipped and the reason they recur.
Breaking the cycle
The pattern we see constantly is a dog treated four or five times for the same ear over two years, each course working and each flare returning. That is not treatment failing. That is the underlying driver never being addressed.
If your dog has had more than two ear infections in a year, the useful conversation is not about the next course of drops. It is about what is causing it: allergy, ear conformation, or the fact that your dog swims in the sea four times a week and nobody has dried its ears since.

Why this is different in Kenya
- Persistent coastal humidity keeps skin and ear canals damp, which is exactly the environment yeast and bacteria need. The same dog moved upcountry frequently stops having the problem, which tells you how much of it is climate rather than the animal.
- Sea swimming is common for coastal dogs and salt water plus sand in the ear canal is a reliable trigger. Nobody upcountry has this variable at all.
- Sand fleas and coastal biting insects add a constant low-level irritation that upcountry dogs do not face, so a coastal dog with a mild allergy shows it far more severely.
- Mange is widespread in Kenya and looks like several other things. It is diagnosed on a skin scrape, so guessing and treating blind wastes weeks while the animal is miserable.
Common questions
Why does my dog's ear infection keep coming back?
Usually because the underlying cause was never addressed. The infection is the visible part; the driver is moisture, an allergy, or ear shape. Treat only the flare and it recurs, on the coast reliably.
Can I dry the ears myself after swimming?
Yes, and it is one of the most useful things you can do. Dry the outer canal with cotton wool, never a cotton bud pushed inside. Ask us about a drying ear cleaner if your dog swims often.
Is it mange?
It might be, and mange is common in Kenya. It needs a skin scrape to confirm, because sarcoptic and demodectic mange need different treatment and both look like ordinary itchy skin.
