Pet travel and relocation from Mombasa
Coastal households turn over constantly and pet export is the paperwork that catches them out. The rabies titre waiting period cannot be shortened by anyone.

The three documents
Every pet export from Kenya rests on the same three:
- A current rabies vaccination certificate, issued by a registered veterinary surgeon.
- A veterinary health certificate, issued within a short window before travel.
- An export permit from the Directorate of Veterinary Services.
Your destination country then adds its own requirements on top, and those are where the timeline is actually decided.
The titre test is the thing that ruins plans
The EU, the UK and several other destinations require a rabies antibody titre test. The sequence is fixed:
- The animal must have a qualifying rabies vaccination.
- A blood sample is taken after a set interval, not before.
- It goes to an approved laboratory.
- Then a waiting period begins, which can run to three months.
None of that can be compressed, appealed or backdated. If a family arrives at our door with flights in five weeks and a destination that requires a titre, the honest answer is that the dog follows later.
Start it the day the move looks likely. Worst case, you paid for a rabies vaccination your pet was legally required to have anyway.
Flying from the coast, specifically
Route. Moi International has fewer long-haul options than Jomo Kenyatta, so many coastal pets fly Mombasa to Nairobi first, or travel by road. Either adds a leg, and the road option means several hours in coastal heat. Do it overnight or early morning.
Heat embargoes. Airlines set maximum temperatures for live animal cargo and enforce them. A Mombasa departure in the hot part of the day can breach them, and the animal is offloaded. Book departures accordingly.
Snub-nosed breeds. Pugs, French bulldogs, Persians and similar are refused by many airlines in cargo, because they die at a materially higher rate. This is airline policy and no veterinary certificate overrides it. Check this before you commit to anything else, because if the answer is no, the entire plan changes.
Crate acclimatisation
Get the crate weeks ahead and let the animal sleep in it at home with the door open. An animal meeting its travel crate for the first time at the airport is an animal that will spend the flight panicking, and stress plus heat is the combination that causes deaths in transit.

Why this is different in Kenya
- Mombasa has a high turnover of expatriate, hospitality and shipping households, so pet relocation comes up far more often here than the population alone would suggest.
- Moi International Airport has fewer long-haul options than Nairobi, so many coastal pets route through Jomo Kenyatta anyway. That adds a domestic leg, its own crate rules and a road transfer in coastal heat, all of which need planning.
- Flying an animal from the coast means loading in high ambient heat, and airlines enforce temperature embargoes. A snub-nosed breed may simply be refused carriage, and that is a policy decision no vet can sign around.
Common questions
How early should I start?
The day the move becomes likely. For the EU or the UK, the rabies titre test plus its waiting period can run to three months, and it starts only after a qualifying rabies vaccination. Three months is not negotiable.
Can my French bulldog fly?
Possibly not. Many airlines refuse snub-nosed breeds in cargo outright because of the death rate, and those that accept them impose temperature limits that a Mombasa departure often breaches. Check the airline policy before anything else.
Is it easier to fly from Nairobi?
Usually yes, for long haul, simply because there are more direct options. Factor in the road or air transfer from the coast and do it in the cool part of the day.
