Vet services in Likoni

South of the channel, denser and less served. Likoni has the highest free-roaming dog population we cover, which makes vaccination the thing that matters most.

Getting to you

Likoni is across the channel and the ferry governs everything. Timing matters more here than distance, so tell us when you book and we will plan around the crossing rather than promise a slot we cannot keep.

Parking at the clinic

Parking is straightforward away from the ferry approach and chaotic near it.

Keeping a dog or cat in Likoni

Likoni’s priority is rabies, and it is not close.

This is the area we cover with the largest free-roaming and semi-owned dog population, and rabies circulates in exactly that population. The legal requirement applies everywhere in Kenya, but here the practical case is much stronger: your dog will meet unknown dogs, and vaccination is what stands between a bite and a catastrophe.

If your dog is bitten by a stray, come the same day. Bring the vaccination card. Bite wounds are deep punctures that close over dirt and need proper cleaning, and the rabies question needs answering rather than assuming.

The ferry shapes everything else. It queues, and an hour in a queue with a deteriorating animal is a bad position. Ring us early rather than late, and consider a home visit, which often makes more sense from Likoni than from anywhere else we cover.

Shade is the last thing, and it is more important than it sounds. Dogs kept for security on small compounds with no shade are at genuine heatstroke risk in coastal heat. Water and shade cost nothing and prevent an emergency we see too often.

Common questions

My dog was bitten by a stray. What should I do?

Come the same day, and bring your dog's vaccination card if you have it. Bite wounds need cleaning properly rather than watching, and there is a rabies exposure question that has to be answered rather than assumed away.

Getting to a vet from here is hard. Can you come to us?

Yes. Given the ferry, home visits often make more sense in Likoni than elsewhere. There is a call-out charge and we will quote it before setting off.

My dog lives outside on a small compound. What matters most?

Shade and water, first. Coastal heat on a compound with no shade is a genuine heatstroke risk. Then rabies vaccination, then tick control.
