- The ferry is the only vehicle link to the island and it queues heavily, so getting a sick animal to a clinic on the Mombasa side can take an hour or more at the wrong time of day. That changes the calculation on when to set off, and it is a real argument for a home visit here.
- Veterinary provision on the south side of the channel is thinner than on the island, so animals in Likoni are presented later in the course of an illness simply because getting seen is harder. We would rather be asked a question early by phone than see an advanced case.
- Household plots in Likoni are small and dogs are frequently kept for security on compounds with limited shade, which in coastal heat is a genuine welfare and heatstroke risk rather than a theoretical one.
